I know.... NONE ;age;

But we have to ;cry;

So what should it be?

How about...... for a full or part shift (at least 6 hours) per year an assessor goes out with a driver just to see that safe driving and working practises are being adhered to - a bit like what is done on the DGV NVQ.......

And before someone says that one asessor cannot know everything - I agree - but there is nothing to stop an assessor asking the driver why they are doing something a certain way....... the assessor learns a lot from that.

The cost is less for the driver as they are working - unless the company pays for the assesor

OK. it's probably a daft alternative idea but I had to start it off....... ;lol;

the idea off the cpc is a good 1. except wots the point of training a driver with 20yrs experience?

i agree with training for tachos,load securing,vehicle checks etc but yet again our biggest problem i.e. car drivers dont get training lie this.

bikers now have to do 3 test to ride a full power bike

truckers have to jump thru hoops to gain a lgv 1

but you can do 2 tests pass and buy a aston martin and blast down the m1 as long as you can afford the insurance.

This might be worth holding back until you get my full report on the Meeting with the DfT ;wink; ;wink;

Discuss if you want though ;wink; ;wink;

DCPc should be introduced gradually for new drivers not the older experienced hands who have been doing the job for years.
Teach the overlong list of rules and regs inflicted on us mere mortals
Teach every method of securing loads and how to secure different kinds of loads.
Teach basic mechanics
Teach skills to drivers which they need to have for different types of work.
Assess each driver at the end of the training have an exam on the stuff learned practical and theoretical. then the driver can have a professional qualification which just might be worthwhile.
Use experienced drivers to do the training those who have done the job for years
All this to be done in special centres set up around the country and all to be funded by the EU as it was it who brought this sh1t into our lives at absolutely no cost to drivers.

For the sake of good debate and keeping ROG happy ;lol;

The answer is obvious and poking us in the eye ;wink; ;wink;

Give all Lorry Drivers 5 days "extra" paid holiday.
Then provide a "Home Study Course" we can do on the internet.

Those without laptops can claim them free just like all those on the dole.

seeeemple :roll: :roll:

first class Baz ;age; ;age;
However if the dcpc does have a future I would like to see it this way
1/goverment pays all training fees out of the millions they make from all motorists.
2/companies/agencies have to give the time required to undertake training on full pay for all,OD/self employed get compensated by tax relief for earnings lost.
3/Training should be relevent to the job and give relevent qualifiquations,ie adr, hiab,tacho, safe loading ect, certificated by candidates passing either a practical, or written test /exam.
4/there should be a set payment for employed drivers per hour for any qualifications other than the hgv licence above the basic rate for the job they do, so companies can target the training relevent to there operations, and the driver recieves a finacial benifit for his efforts.

Teach the Dcpc to newly qualified drivers, Drivers with 5 years or less under their belts perhaps.

A better idea in my opinion is to, bring in some sort of apprenticeship to the industry. I seem to remember the "Young drivers scheme" back in the 80s. Not sure how effective that was but, any form of early education in this job could only be a bonus.

roll it up real tight, then shove it up the twats arse who brought it to our shores, as i am not going to do it unless

1. some one pays for it, for me to get to class 1 it must have cost 3 grand
2. while on course i get full pay, No sat/sun.
3. i get some sort of financial recondition for my increased knowledge

if non of these criteria are meet then i WILL give up driving hgv and drive a van. i dont care about a large drop in wage. this i promise.

didnt do me any harm. it wasnt all about being sat in a classroom. it was about on the job training. being out with someone, watching how they do it. then, they watch you. then when youve earned the trust and respect, off you go.

my young drivers scheme lasted 5yrs!! not only did i go out with the drivers, i did yard/warehouse duties, office duties and garage duties.
this way, i had a good idea what went on and why. thats why when i got a job in the warehouse where i currently work, i was and am more able to deal with a driver and how his vehicle should be loaded.rather than some of the dim-wits what drive the flts.
thats why when i worked for an owner driver i was able to diagnose something was wrong with the wagon, and able to assist in its repair and maintenance.

the driver cpc should be something we all want to do. enjoy it and look forward to it. rather than feel its just another stealth tax, with someone teaching us something they know nothing about. teaching us something that we will forget by the time we leave the classroom.

and the training should be appropriate to the job you are doing at the time. what use is tipper training to me when all i pull is a tautliner.

if you change jobs, and become a tipper driver, you get more training, and say another mark in your book to say your trained on that job.

Hard to see how someone can teach safety and security of load, in general perhaps yes, but the industry is too diverse for that, whats your load ? container? steel? hanging meat? tanker? tank on a low loader?, cars?, animals? cement? ect ect.
Same applys to a greater or lesser extent to driving, what may be appropriate for one type of vehicle/load may be just plain wrong for another.
So what would I like to see?
Well earlier this year took my first days "training" on tachos, working time directive and have to admit I did get something out of it learnt a few things (after 16 years driving).
next year? first aid maybe, did a course years ago and wouldnt mind a refresher, I did once have ocaision to use some of what I learnt (on myself !)
year after? Maybe something on foreign traffic laws, cross border paperwork, customs ect.
after that Ive no idea.
On the question of finance, its interesting to note the current debate regarding the funding of university education, as some bright spark said on TV "a better educated population benefits society as a whole so it should be paid for by government", hmmmm :idea:
